Description: The Centre of Excellence on Ammonia Technologies (CEAT) at Cardiff University leads innovative research into ammonia (NH3) as a clean energy vector. NH3 is emerging as a solution for decarbonising industries like marine, power, and heating due to its compatibility with existing infrastructure and versatility. Cardiff’s decade-long NH3 research supports creating the world’s first green ammonia facility in Wales, enhancing net-zero capabilities, industrial applications, global collaborations, and reskilling opportunities.
Role: Cardiff University leads demonstration activities on a plasma-assisted smart liquid ammonia burner. Their expert team, specialising in nanosecond plasmas and liquid ammonia injection, focuses on integration, optimisation, and smart control strategies, making it suitable for stationary and mobile thermal systems.
Description: The Office National d’Études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA), also known as The French Aerospace Lab, is France’s premier aerospace and defense research center. Founded in 1946 and renamed in 1963, ONERA covers all aerospace disciplines and technologies and has been instrumental in both high-profile French and European aerospace programs, including the Ariane launch vehicles, Concorde, Dassault Mirage and Rafale fighters, among others.
Role: ONERA will bring its expertise in numerical modelling and simulation in the field of plasma discharges (co-lead of self-consistent plasma simulation with CERTH) and their modelling using machine learning techniques.
Description: Lund University was founded in 1666 and is one of world’s top universities with over 47,000 students and 8,800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg, Malmö and Ljungbyhed. The University offers one of the broadest ranges of programmes and courses in Scandinavia, based on cross-disciplinary and cutting-edge research. The unique disciplinary range encourages boundary-crossing collaborations both within academia and with society, creating excellent conditions for scientific breakthroughs and innovations.
Role: The Division of Combustion Physics of Lund University will develop a detailed kinetic mechanism and also perform reliable modelling studies for NOx prediction and control in NH3 combustion applications.

Description: The CNRS, or National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), is France’s leading public research organisation, founded in 1939. It operates under the supervision of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and is recognised worldwide for its contributions across various scientific fields, including physics, biology, engineering, and social sciences. The CNRS supports fundamental research and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, employing thousands of researchers and scientists who work in labs across France. Its mission is to advance knowledge, address complex scientific challenges, and contribute to technological innovation and societal progress. CNRS holds the “HR Excellence in Research HRS4R” award, demonstrating its commitment to improving working conditions and providing an excellent environment for research.
Role: CNRS’s extensive experience in designing and characterising nanosecond pulsed plasma systems will enable them to develop a reliable plasma system and scrutinise it to enhance ammonia combustion for cleaner energy.
Description: EXELISIS is an SME located in Greece with extensive expertise in project management, innovation management and technical consultancy helping organisations implement and convey their ideas effectively. Additionally, they specialise in communication and design, crafting compelling strategies and visuals that enhance the visibility and impact of their clients’ projects.
Role: EXELISIS will be monitoring the communication and dissemination activities ensuring that CAIPIRINH3A technologies will reach the appropriate audiences effectively to maximise the project’s impact. EXELISIS is also responsible for the exploitation and IPR management to bridge the gap between innovation and market adoption.
Description: The clean energy and future transportations are two main research groups at UoB. Currently, the groups are leading several EU and EPSRC funded research projects in which engine experiments and detailed numerical simulations are strategically used to develop in-cylinder treatments and exhaust gas reforming technologies to improve the fuel efficiency of engines and reduce combustion emissions.
Role: UoB is responsible for incorporating the detailed kinetic mechanism that is developed by Lu into the existing computational toolsets that have been developed and widely validated at UoB to model plasma-assisted ammonia/air combustion based on the experiments at Cardiff. This involves two-way coupling between the Boltzmann and the kinetic solver in which the electron impact equations are solved, and the results are passed on to the kinetic solver for integrating the ODEs of thermal reactions.
Description: CLEOS was formed as a collaboration between three Greek shipping companies, GasLog, Drylog and Olympic Shipping, with the purpose to perform research and development, and offer advisory services regarding decarbonisation. These include energy efficiency technologies, alternative fuels, power generation and propulsion systems, emissions control and aftertreatment, carbon capture, and other solutions pertaining to marine vessels.
Role: CLEOS will assess the impact of the CAIPIRINH3A technology for the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, will provide actual quantified information for the TEA/LCA/LCC analyses and will disseminate the results of the project to the maritime community.
Description: Founded in 1861, RINA has grown into a major global player in testing, inspection, certification, and engineering consultancy.
