The Plasma Mist Ammonia (PlasMi-NH3) burner will be a fully operational combustor with outstanding performance by utilising unique plasma systems along with an efficient L-NH3 injection system and advanced combustion control strategies to create a vibrant cocktail of chemical species and enhance NH3 combustion with minimum NOx emissions. Accurate kinetic modeling, plasma, CFD and combustion simulations will support the development of this unique concept.
The CAIPIRINH3A team will ensure the PlasMi-NH3 Burner is both environmentally and economically viable through comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) studies. And through detailed business and market studies along with active social engagement, CAIPIRINH3A will maximise its market uptake, stakeholder attraction and public acceptance.
Innovative plasma sources, will be utilised to maximise the following mechanisms to tackle the challenging physicochemical properties of ammonia and unlock its full potential. See “What is the challenge in burning ammonia?”
Using NH3 mist instead of conventional spray methods produces smaller droplets, enhancing surface interaction with plasmas and boosting efficiency. As NH3 expands, it cools the environment, ensuring a portion of it stays in the liquid phase.
Several smart technologies will also be featured in the PlasMi-NH3 burner, making it safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly compared to traditional burners. Active Instability Control will monitor any pressure fluctuations and adjust plasma systems in real-time to maintain a stable and safe operation. Secondly, an early NOx detection system, powered by advanced machine learning algorithms, will identify any emission patterns early and adjust conditions to minimise harmful NOx emissions.
